Henry Tewksbury (Tewxbery)
Henry Tewksbury was born in England. Exact year is uncertain and likely was 1616-1626 range. He likely settled in Newbury, Massachusetts in the 1640s. He married Martha Copp, the widow of William Harvey, in 1650. In 1669 they moved to Amesbury. Henry was a weaver and died in 1704. They had multiple children including Naomi born in 1666 and John born in 1674. (Naomi’s granddaughter Sarah would marry John’s grandson Henry in 1764.)
John Tewksbury (Tuxbury)
John Tewksbury was born July 17, 1674 to Henry and Martha. He married Hannah Colby (1677-1730) in January 1696. John died in 1750 and is buried in Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Amesbury, Massachusetts. They had multiple children including John Jr. born in 1714.
John Tewksbury, Jr (Tuxbury)
John Tewksbury, Jr was born on November 29, 1714 to John and Hannah. He married Sarah Colby (1714-?) in Amesbury November 25, 1736. John died April 4, 1791. They had multiple children including Henry born in 1739.
Henry Tewksbury (Tewxbary)
Henry was born in Amesbury on November 27, 1739 to John, Jr and Sarah. He married Sarah Calfe (1747-1832) on April 26, 1764. They moved to Weare, New Hampshire in 1772 to farm. Henry enlisted and fought in the Revolutionary War. He served first with John Parker’s Company as a private and then in Timothy Clement’s Company stationed at New Castle and defensive fortifications around Portsmouth. He was a second lieutenant when he left the army. Henry died November 28, 1806 and is buried in the Buxton-Philbrick Cemetery in South Weare, NH. They had ten children including Henry, Jr born in 1786.
Henry’s epitaph reads:
Friends and physicians could not save
My mortal body from the grave
Nor can the grave contain me here
When Christ my savior doth appear
Sarah’s epitaph reads:
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord thus saith the spirit. They shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them.
The cemetery is accessed by walking through an apple orchard on private property.
Henry Tewksbury, Jr
Henry was born on February 13, 1786 to Henry and Sarah in Weare, NH. He married Martha Clement (1790-1860) on April 26, 1811. They moved to Wilmot around 1816 and farmed at Pommeria. They had four children including Miriam who was born in 1818. Miriam was David Henry Tewksbury’s mother and after she discovered she had married a bigamist her father adopted her son. Henry died in 1864. He is buried in the Tewksbury Cemetery in North Wilmot, NH.
